How can we help you?
Answers to the questions we hear most often. If you still need a hand, our team is only a message away.
How do I create an account?
Choose Student sign up or Teacher sign up. You can register with an email and password, use a passwordless sign-in link, or continue with Google. Parents may open an account on behalf of a child.
Why must I verify my email?
We send a verification link to confirm the address belongs to you. This protects your account and helps us reach you about your application. Click the link in the email — it expires after 24 hours. You can request a new one from your dashboard.
How much does AfriTutors cost?
Students subscribe for UGX 5,000 in Uganda or $3 outside Uganda. Teachers subscribe for UGX 10,000 in Uganda or $5 outside Uganda.
Which payment methods can I use?
Mobile money only — MTN Mobile Money and Airtel Money. We do not take cards or PayPal at launch. The merchant code, the exact amount and a short reference appear the moment you start a payment, so you always know who you are paying before you approve it.
How do lessons and payment for lessons work?
Find a tutor on Available Tutors, check their rate, and send a lesson request. Once the tutor accepts, you pay them directly on their own mobile money number — AfriTutors never holds that money, so we cannot lose it and there is nothing for us to refund from.
AfriTutors charges a separate booking fee (UGX 1,000 in Uganda, $0.50 elsewhere) for recording and protecting the lesson. It is not a cut of what your tutor earns — they keep 100% of their rate.
What if a lesson goes wrong?
Either the student or the teacher can report a problem on the lesson. Our team reviews it, records the outcome (completed, cancelled or no-show), and emails both sides. Because the lesson money went straight to your tutor, AfriTutors cannot return it — which is why we publish every tutor's rate and every student's rating up front.
I am a teacher. How do I start getting booked?
Once your account is approved, open your dashboard and publish a teaching rate — the amount, the currency, whether it is per hour or per lesson, and how long a lesson lasts. Students can then book you straight from your profile, and every completed lesson is added to your earnings ledger (students pay you directly, so that money is already yours).
Can I rate a tutor?
Yes. After a lesson is marked complete, you will be asked to rate your tutor out of five. Ratings and reviews appear on the tutor's public profile and help other learners choose.
When can I start sending messages?
Students can message once they are approved and have paid. Teachers can message once they are verified, have paid, and are approved. Until then, your dashboard shows a reminder of exactly what is outstanding.
I am a teacher. What documents do I need?
A PDF copy of your university certificate, your registration certificate or licence, and your national ID or passport. You upload these from your dashboard after signing up. Only the verification team can view them, and we only use them to verify you.
Can I attach documents in a chat?
Yes. In the message room, use the attachment button (the paperclip) to send files such as past papers, notes and images. Attachments are private to you and the person you are chatting with.
I forgot my password. What now?
On the login page, click “Forgot password?” after entering your email. We will send a secure reset link. Alternatively, use the passwordless “email me a sign-in link” option.
Is my personal data safe?
We take this seriously: passwords are hashed (never stored in plain text), sensitive fields are encrypted, documents are stored outside the public web and served only to authorised users, sessions expire, and sensitive actions are logged. See our Terms of Service for details.
